You made a beautiful birthday card. Sent it on WhatsApp. And⦠it looks blurry. Pixelated. Washed out.
Sound familiar? It's not you β it's WhatsApp.
Why WhatsApp destroys image quality
By default, WhatsApp compresses every image you send. It shrinks the file size so it loads faster β but the trade-off is quality. Photos and wish cards get reduced to roughly 30β50% of their original resolution.
For casual photos, that's fine. For a beautifully designed wish card with text? It looks terrible β edges get fuzzy, small text becomes unreadable.
WhatsApp isn't broken. It's just optimized for speed over quality. You have to tell it to send in HD.
How to send HD images on WhatsApp (2025)
WhatsApp added an HD toggle in 2023. Here's how to use it.
Open the chat and attach the image
Tap the attachment icon (paperclip / plus) β Gallery β select your wish card.
Look for the "HD" button at the top
Once the image preview opens, you'll see an HD button in the top bar. Tap it.
Choose "HD Quality"
A menu will appear with two options: Standard Quality and HD Quality. Pick HD Quality.
Send
Hit send. The image will now go through at near-original quality.
Turn HD on every time. It doesn't stay on by default β you have to toggle it per image.
The problem with WhatsApp's "HD"
Even with HD toggled, WhatsApp still compresses images to about 80% quality. For most photos, that's fine. But for wish cards β especially ones with fine text or gradients β it can still look soft.
To keep full quality, you need a workaround: send the image as a document.
Method 2 β Send as Document (100% quality)
This bypasses WhatsApp's compression entirely.
Attach β Document (not Gallery)
In the chat, tap the attachment icon β choose Document instead of Gallery or Photos.
Browse and select your image
Navigate to where your wish card is saved (Downloads, Photos, etc.) and select it.
Send
The image will be sent as a document at full original quality β no compression at all.
The recipient sees it as a file, not as an inline image. They have to tap to open it. Some people find this less "instant" feeling.
Which method should you use?
For wish cards specifically β the ones with text and design β send as document. That's how you keep the design crisp.
Why your wish card looks blurry even before sending
Sometimes the problem isn't WhatsApp. It's the source file. Here's what to check:
- Image resolution: Should be at least 1080 Γ 1350 pixels. If it's smaller, it'll look soft everywhere.
- File format: PNG for crisp text, JPG for photos. PNG looks sharper for wish cards.
- File size: Anything under 500 KB is probably too compressed. A good wish card is 800 KB β 2 MB.
Our Wishes Maker exports wish cards at exactly 1080 Γ 1350 PNG β the ideal size for WhatsApp, Instagram, and WhatsApp Status.
Extra β Making sure the recipient sees it right
Even if you send HD, some things can go wrong:
- They have "Save to Photos" off β the image stays inside WhatsApp at full quality. Fine.
- They screenshot it β the screenshot loses quality. Ask them to tap and save the image instead.
- They forward it β forwarding re-compresses. Tell them to re-send as document if it matters.
Instagram Stories + WhatsApp Status
WhatsApp Status (like Instagram Stories) has its own compression. It's even more aggressive than chat.
To keep quality in Status:
- Use a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio (our Wishes Maker cards are 4:5, close enough)
- Upload a PNG, not a JPG
- Keep the file under 5 MB
The ultimate checklist
- Start with a high-res image (1080 Γ 1350+)
- Save as PNG if it has text
- In WhatsApp, use HD toggle for quick sends
- For important cards, use Attach β Document (full quality)
- For Status, use vertical ratio + PNG
Follow those five steps and your wish cards will always arrive looking exactly how you designed them.

Open Wishes Maker βOne last thing
WhatsApp's compression is a feature, not a bug β it keeps the app fast and data-light. But knowing how to bypass it gives you control.
Next time someone's birthday comes around, send them a card that looks designed, not compressed. Small effort. Big difference.
